MSC: Week 1

Today marks one week at Medsphere. It's 6:20pm. Steve and I are heading to Indianapolis to do a technology review with a company that we want to partner with... Yeah, if I had to travel all the time, this could get annoying, but if the trip is useful and productive I'm all for it.

It's been an interesting week. There's a lot of work to be done here. At the moment, much of it is tactical -- related to ongoing and upcoming deployments. Although I'm helping manage the development effort, our team must also work on the custom enhancements and interfaces required for each deployment. This is going to be a distracting aspect of the job. Making sure we keep our heads up, looking towards the long-term goals while trying to keep up with today's customers needs.

Ten years of friends

My last day at UCI was a week ago. It's been a very strange experience to leave. I guess I've never left a place after an almost 10 year association.

When I think back about the work done there's only a few fragments here and there... Sure we did meaningful things (to us), but what really comes to mind is the friends.

Ten years with one group of people really allows you and your families to become entangled. We know each others kids and spouses, many of them were at our wedding, we were at theirs, we babysat their kids (or pets), etc. That's the tough part of leaving and one I hadn't really considered. Sure I liked what I did at GSM, but we spent years building those relationships.

Will we be able to build new relationships at Medsphere? Without a doubt. That just takes time. What troubles me most is, will we be able to maintain these existing relationships?
